Women Wrestlers Compete at WCWA Nationals

MARIETTA, Ga. -- Ferrum College entered 10 wrestlers in the Women's Collegiate Wrestling Association (WCWA) National Championships, held Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8-9, at Cobb County Civic Center.

Menlo College won the team title with 199.5 points and three individual champions. Simon Fraser University was second with 195 points and one champion, while McKendrie University was third with 189 points and a pair of champs. Emmanuel College (167.5, 1 champ) and King University (128.5) rounded out the top five teams. Ferrum placed 26th with 12.5 points among a field of 36 teams.

Autumn Potkay (116 lbs), Marissa Ruiz (123), Tayler Kleemoff (155) and Leya Deickman (191) each won one match. Potkay beat Chelsea Dionisio of Jamestown University 10-4, Ruiz beat Rosa Ramirez of Eastern Oregon University 10-0, Kleemoff beat Kailee Doak of Warner Pacific University 10-0 and Deickman beat Rosalba Orozco of Midland University 6-0.

The WCWA Nationals was the season-ending event for Coach Jessica Medina's team. Deickman is the Panthers' lone graduate this May, while 16 wrestlers are eligible to return to the team next season.
