LYNCHBURG, Virginia -- Ferrum College closed the 2019 volleyball season with a 3-1 non-conference win over Christendom College this afternoon on the road. The match was played at a neutral site, Randolph College.
Set scores were 18-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-14. The win was Ferrum's second in as many matches with the Crusaders this season.
Ferrum trailed early in the first set, but cut the lead to 18-17, only to see Christendom rattle off seven straight points to close out the set. In the second, the Panthers trailed 20-17 before rallying for eight consecutive points, including an Ashlynn Willoughby kill on set point from a Kayla Divers assist.
Ferrum led throughout the third set, winning on a Chemaiya Jordan smash off an Arielle Tritt assist. The Panthers built an 8-7 lead in the fourth and final set, then used a 17-7 run to close out the match.
Anne Carter Harding led the Panthers with 12 kills. Tritt had 18 assists to go with 17 digs, while Ashley Roberts had 10 assists. Divers and Layura Henley had 20 and 10 digs, respectively, in their career finals. Cassidy Burke had a season-high eight kills, and Wiloughby chipped in with eight digs and six kills.
Christendom got 16 kills and 18 digs from Mary Heisler, and 16 kills from Michaela Pennefather. Claire Mense had 29 assists and 17 digs, and Maria Cook added 16 dig for the Crusaders.
The win closed out the season for the Panthers. Ferrum will lose three players to graduation this May, while 12 players are eligible to return for the 2020 season.
