FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College earned a 2-0 women's soccer win tonight at home over visiting Averett University. The non-conference game was the season opener for both squads.
Following a scoreless first half, the Panthers got on the scoreboard first when Brianna Honse ripped a shot past Averett goalkeeper Bailee Brown in the 56th minute of play. One minute later, Cayla Berry took a pass from Casey Raggett and scored for the final tally of the night.
Brown played all 90 minutes in net for the Cougars, making nine saves. Taylor Dodson played all 90 minutes for Ferrum with one save. Ferum out-shot Averett 22-1 and closed the game with a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.
"I was impressed with the collective effort, energy, and competitiveness of the team today. Our goal was to start fast, finish strong, and compete for 90 minutes. We did that. Moving forward we need to work on finishing our chances, so we can put the game out of reach. Otherwise, I'm happy with how we started the season." -- Head Coach James Lofton
Lofton's team will be back in action Tuesday, September 4, at North Carolina Wesleyan College. The non-conference game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
