White, Barr Grab Titles at Cougar Open

RESULTS

DANVILLE, Va. -- Ferrum College had 28 wrestlers compete in the 2019 Cougar Open, hosted today by Averett University at the E. Stuart James Grant Center.

Sophomores Jalen White (125 lbs) and Malik Barr (177) grabbed individuals titles, while three others placed second. In all, 13 Panthers placed in the top six individually.

THE BASICS
White was seeded #3 and posted a 4-0 mark with two pins en route to winning his weight class. Included was an 8-6 decision in the finals over top seed and NCAA qualifier Sam Braswell from host Averett.

Barr was the top seed and went 3-0 with a pin to earn his title, earning a 6-3 decision over Stephon Halliburton of Queens University in the finals.

Elijah Martin (157) closed the day with a 3-1 mark and one pin to finish second, Cullen Nash-Cleek (197) was 2-1 and finished second, and Carlos Leyva (285) went 3-1 with two pins to place second.

Braden Homsey (197) was upset in the opening round, butt reeled off four straight wins to go 4-1 on the day with a pin and place third. Jacob Grady (174) wrestled six matches, posting a 5-1 mark and finishing third.

Placing fourth were JD McMillin (125), Caden Dalton (149) and Isaac Hudson (165) all finished fourth, while Galilee Kissell (165) and George Mitchell (28) were fifth. Tatum Tyree (157) was sixth.

BACK ON THE MAT
Yetzer's team will be back in action Saturday, November 16, at the VBR Sports/Southeast Duals, to be hosted by Ferrum at the Salem Civic Center. The Panthers are slated to take on Millikan University at 2:45 p.m. and Otterbein University at 6:15 p.m. The Panthers then host the US Marine Corp-Star City Classic at the Salem Civic Center Sunday, November 17.
