Saunders, Matthews Earn Titles at Cougar Open

DANVILLE, Va. -- Collin Saunders and Alveno Matthews won individual titles for Ferrum College's men's wrestling team this afternoon at the Cougar Open, hosted by Averett University.

Saunders went 4-0 to earn the 149-pound weight class, posting two pins and two technical falls. In the finals, Saunders beat Averett's Joshua Linkhouse, winning a 15-3 major decision. Matthews went 4-0 at 285 pounds, posting a 3-1 sudden victory win in the championship match over Southern Virginia University's Alex Brunner.

Jalen White went 2-1 and placed second at 125 pounds in his first collegiate tournament. Mario Vasquez went 3-1 and placed second at 141 pounds. Also placing second for the Panthers was Austin Smith at 157 pounds with a 2-1 mark on the day.

Would of like to finish out the last round a little better but our guys are making improvements week to week.  I think if the young guys continue to work on their preparation- we will be fun  team to watch come March. Coach Nate Yetzer's team will be back in action Saturday, November 17, at the Southeast Duals, to be held at the Salem Civic Center in Salem, Virginia. The Panthers with wrestle Huntingdon College at 1:00 p.m., Otterbein University at 3:00 p.m. and Messiah College at 5:00 p.m.
