RALEIGH, N.C. -- Ferrum College earned a 50-45 non-conference women's basketball victory tonight on the road over Meredith College at Weatherspoon Gym. It was the season opener for both schools.
Meredith opened the game with a 15-9 lead after one period. The Panthers rallied, using a 24-point spurt in the second period, including a pair of three-pointers from Jessy Nichols and five points from Jacy Marvin, to grab an eight-point lead at the break.
Meredith got as close as four points on three occasions in the second half, the last on a Katherine Holmes layup with 1:05 left in regulation. That shot trimmed the lead to 46-42, but the Panthers held on down the stretch to get the win.
BEHIND THE WHISTLE
"Good win tonight on the road. Meredith is always a hard place to play. I am proud of the effort tonight. It wasn't pretty but it's a win to open the season. We now have a week to prepare for next weekend's games." -- Head Coach Bryan Harvey
Harvey's team will be back in action Friday and Saturday, Nov. 16-17, at the McDaniel College Tip-Off Classic in Westminster, Maryland. The Panthers face host McDaniel Friday at 6:00 p.m., then take on Widener College Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
