Big Third Period Lifts E&H Past Ferrum Women

FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College's women's basketball team dropped a non-conference game to visiting Emory & Henry College, falling 63-56 tonight at Swartz Gym. The game was Ferrum's home opener.

Emory & Henry (8-3), Ferrum (5-6)

Ferrum led 24-14 after one period and 31-23 at halftime. The Wasps came out of the locker room on fire, outscoring Ferrum 27-8 in the third period. The Panthers trailed 56-51 with just over three minutes left in regulation when Kelli Mounce made a layup, was fouled and sank a free throw to close it to 56-54 with 2:47 remaining. That was as close as Ferrum would get as the Wasps closed with a 7-2 run to end the game. Tessa Johnson scored 14 of her 22 points in the second half for Emory & Henry.

Coach Bryan Harvey's team returns to action Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 7-8, with a pair of USA South road games. The Panthers play at North Carolina Wesleyan College Saturday and at Methodist University Sunday. Both games tip off at 2:00 p.m.
