FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College's Zarkia Mattox has been named USA South Women's Basketball Player of the Week for her play in two games last week. The honor is the fifth this season for the junior guard out from Rocky Mount, Virginia. Mattox also earned the award Nov. 28, Dec. 12, Jan. 9 and Jan. 23.
Mattox averaged a double-double, averaging 23 points and 13.5 rebounds in two games last week. She had 31 points, 19 rebounds and five assists Saturday, Jan. 28, in Ferrum's 61-54 USA South win at William Peace University. She then had 15 points and eight rebounds in her team's 48-46 loss at Greensboro College Sunday, Jan. 29. That loss broke up a seven-game win streak and was Ferrum's first league setback this season.
Also nominated this week was Lauren Biliter of Maryville College, Brianna Barrett of Piedmont College, Samm Chandler of Averett University, Marilauren Farr of LaGrange College, Alexis Fitzgerald of North Carolina Wesleyan College, Mikayla Seivers of Salem College, Christian Sanders of Methodist University, Monica Smalls of Greensboro and Joanna Smith of Covenant College.
Ferrum returns to action Thursday, Feb. 2, at Mary Baldwin University. The USA South game tips off at 7:30 p.m. in Staunton, Virginia. The Panthers then host North Carolina Wesleyan College Saturday, Feb. 4, at 4 p.m. and Methodist University Sunday, Feb. 5, at 3:00 p.m. Both weekend games are league matchups.
