BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Zarkia Mattox posted a triple-double with 48 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists to lead Ferrum College to a 91-89 win in overtime over Bridgewater College tonight at Nininger Hall. Mattox's 48 points is a new school record for single-game scoring.
Ferrum (4-4), Bridgewater (3-4)
Kelli Mounce's three-point bucket with 37 seconds left in the fourth quarter gave Ferrum a 79-77 lead. Bridgewater's Sydni Carey tied the game at 79-79 on a layup with nine seconds left in regulation. Ferrum had a chance to win in in regulation, but a missed jumper by Jessie O'Conner sent the game into overtime.
The two teams traded baskets for the first 4:32 of overtime before Ferrum's Erin March blocked a shot and the Panthers controlled the rebound. Mattox was fouled with eight seconds left and then sank a pair of free throws for the eventual game-winning points. Bridgewater nearly sent the game into a second overtime, but Jessica Lam's layup with 0:03 showing would not fall for the Eagles.
Mattox's 48 points topped Ferrum's previous single-game scoring record of 44 points, set by Ann Reynolds against Emory & Henry College Dec. 10, 1985 and equaled by Kia Williams against Shenandoah University Feb. 15 1996. Mattox is believed to the first women's basketball player to notch a triple-double in Ferrum's NCAA Division III era (1985-present).
