Ferrum's Mattox Named State Player of the Year

VaSID All-State Release

FERRUM, Va. -- The Virginia Sports Information Directors Association has released the 2017 VaSID College Division Women's Basketball All-State Team, and Ferrum College's Zarkia Mattox has been named Player of the Year. Mattox was also named to the All-State first team.

Mattox joins a list of 17 former Ferrum women's basketball players to earn VaSID All-State honors, but is the first Virginia state Player of the Year. At the conclusion of the 2016-17 regular season, she was also named USA South Player of the Year and earned a spot on the All-South Region first team.

Mattox averaged 21.3 points and 10.6 rebounds per game this year for the Panthers. She earned USA South Player of the Week honors six times, and was named to the Transylvania Thanksgiving Classic All-Tournament Team in November. She set Ferrum's new school record for single game points when she scored 48 in an OT win Dec. 5 at Bridgewater College, recording Ferrum's first-ever triple-double with 12 rebounds and 10 assists that night. She was named to the Team of the Week on Dec. 12.

Mattox closed out her junior year in the ninth place on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,293 career points. She is 348 points behind Ferrum's all-time leading scorer and former teammate Jacole Hairston, who scored 1,641 career points for the Panthers from 2012-15.

Ferrum closed the 2016-17 season with an 18-9 overall and 12-2 USA South record under 12th-year Head Coach Coach Bryan Harvey, who earned his fifth USA South Coach of the Year honor this season. The Panthers are a combined 51-30 during Mattox's three years, including a 39-10 mark in USA South play.
