Ferrum's Mattox Named First Team All-Region All-South Region Team

FERRUM, Va. -- The 2017 Women's Basketball All-Region Teams have been announced and Ferrum College junior Zarkia Matttox has been named to the South Region first team. All-Region first team selections are eligible for All-America honors, to be announced at the NCAA Final Four this weekend.

Mattox was the USA South Player of the Year this season and a repeat All-Conference first team selection. She averaged 21.3 points and 10.6 rebounds per game this year for the Panthers. Mattox was a six-time Player of the Week selection and was named to the Transylvania Thanksgiving Classic All-Tournament Team in November.

Mattox set Ferrum's new school record for single game points when she dropped 48 in an overtime win against Bridgewater College Dec. 5 on the road. In that game, she recorded Ferrum's first-ever triple-double, posting 12 rebounds and 10 assists to go with her 48 points. She was named to the Team of the Week on Dec. 12.

In Ferrum's Dec. 30 home loss to Emory & Henry College, Mattox became the 21st member of Ferrum's 1000-Point Club. She closed the season in the ninth place on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,293 career points. She is now 348 points behind Ferrum's all-time leading scorer and former teammate Jacole Hairston, who scored 1,641 career points for the Panthers from 2012-15.

Ferrum closed the 2016-17 season with an 18-9 overall and 12-2 USA South record under 12th-year Head Coach Bryan Harvey, who was the 2017 USA South Women's Basketball Coach of the Year, his fifth such honor.
