Ferrum's Akers Named All-America Honorable Mention by WBCA
Women's Basketball Coaches Association

FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College senior guard Tesla Akers has been named to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) 2013 Division III All-America Team as an honorable mention.  Akers is Ferrum's first women's basketball All-American since 2005.

Akers led Ferrum to it’s best-ever season this year with a 24-5 final record and a second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament.  She averaged 12.7 points and 2.5 assists this season, while shooting 40% from the floor and 33% from behind the three-point line.  Akers closed her four-year career with 1390 points, 354 assists and 187 steals, averaging 12.4 points per game.  Akers' 1390 career points moves her into the #5 spot on the all-time scoring list.

Akers was named to the D3hoops.com All-Region third team this season, and was a USA South All-Conference first team selection for the second straight year.  She earned four All-Conference honors at Ferrum, two first team (2002, 2013) and two third team (2010, 2011).

The 5'6" guard out of Princeton, West Virginia, led Ferrum to the 2012 USA South Tournament title, where she was named Tournament MVP.  Last year, the Panthers made their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 17 seasons.  Ferrum lost in the title game of the 2013 USA South Tournament, but received an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament.

Akers played four years under Coach Bryan Harvey, who recently completed his eighth year at the helm of the women's basketball program.  Ferrum went 68-30 during Akers' four-year career, a .694 winning percentage.  The Panthers also went 57-15 (.792) in USA South play during that span, and 42-6 (.875) at home.

"Tesla has been a great player for us the past four years," said Harvey.  "She helped us get over the hump, through the conference tournament and into the NCAA Tournament the past two years.  We're so proud of everything she's accomplished, and it's great to see her being recognized by coaches from across the country."

Ferrum has had seven previous women's basketball All-Americans, two when Ferrum was a junior college and five since the College joined the NCAA Division III ranks in 1987.  Ferrum's most recent All-Americans were Tina McBride and Tara Toland, who earned honorable mention from the WBCA in 2003 and 2005, respectively.
