FERRUM, Va. -- Tesla Akers had 21 points and five assists to lead top-seeded Ferrum College to an 84-60 win in the quarterfinals of the 2012 USA South Women's Basketball Tournament tonight at Swartz Gymnasium.
The Panthers led by nine at haltime, 36-27, but used a 13-3 run in the first four minutes of the second half to take a 49-30 lead on a Kristen Keith layup at 15:51. Keith and Jacole Hairston had 16 points each, with Keith adding nine rebounds and three blocked shot to her line. Kayla Goins had 10 points and six assists.
Shanice Miles led #8 Mary Baldwin (7-18) with 23 points. The Fighting Squirrels also got 17 points from Meagan Barron and 10 from Sabrina Desper. Ferrum controlled the glass, outrebounding Mary Baldwin 45-31.
The top four seeds in the tournament advanced through to the semifinals, see below. Ferrum (21-5) will face #4 Methodist University Friday at home in the semifinals at 7 p.m. The other semifinal will pit #2 Christopher Newport University against #3 Greensboro College in Newport News.
