Panthers Scamper Past Mary Baldwin with Second-Half Outburst



STAUNTON, Va. — Tesla Akers and Jacole Hairston chipped in 17 points each to fuel a second-half onslaught as Ferrum College ran away with an, 80-56, USA South road victory over Mary Baldwin College on Wednesday night.

Ferrum shot 46.7 percent from the floor to improve to 12-3 overall, 7-1 in the USA South. Mary Baldwin drops to 4-8 overall, 2-6 in league play.

The Fighting Squirrels kept within striking distance for most of the first half, and went into break only behind by two, 33-31. 

With the Panthers ahead, 42-38, at the 15:57 mark, a Shea Smith free throw ignited a 20-7 game-clinching run to put the Black and Gold up 62-45, with 6:40 remaining in the contest.

Ferrum clamped down on defense, holding MBC to 26.9 percent shooting. The defense also caused 28 turnovers, which translated into 29 points. The visitors owned the paint as well, outscoring Mary Baldwin 34-20.

Hairston, the reigning USA South Rookie of the Week, set new career highs in points (17) and steals (seven) for the Panthers. Smith also reached double figures with 10 points.

USA South Player of the Week Kristen Keith notched eight points to move past Kia Williams for fifth place on the all-time career scoring list. Keith has 1,316 career points.

MBC got 17 points and 11 boards from Meagan Barron. Sabrina Desper poured in 11 points.

Coach Bryan Harvey's squad returns to Swartz Gymnasium for a Saturday USA South tilt against North Carolina Wesleyan College. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
