Salem Sweeps Ferrum on Softball Senior Day

FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader to Salem College this afternoon during Senior Day. The Panthers opened with an 8-1 loss, then fell 5-2 in the nightcap.

Prior to the game, the team honored seven graduating seniors; Jasmine Agee, Haley Blaisure, Lois Carpenter, Jordan Hamlett, Tiffanie Moore, Bailey Oakes and Cheyenne Strickland. Each senior was introduced with parents escorting them onto the field, and a teammate spoke on behalf of each senior.

Salem scored four runs in the second inning of game one, two on Kayla Ogle's RBI double to right center. Ferrum scored its lone run in the third inning when Keri Hamlett singled to left field, advanced to second on Cheyenne Strickland's single up the middle, moved to third on Brandi Woods' sac bunt and scored on Allison McGehee's single up the middle. Salem went on to score two runs in the fourth inning and one each in the sixth and seventh for the final count.

In the nightcap, the Spirits again scored four runs in the second inning. Ferrum got one back in the third on Arielle Eure's RBI single up the middle, then added a run in the fourth on Keri Hamlett's RBI single to left field. Salem added an insurance run in the sixth inning. Miranda Barker went 3-3 at the plate with a pair of runs and earned her second win of the day inside the circle.

Coach Gerald Culler's team will be back in action Wednesday, April 10, at Guilford College. The Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start in Greensboro, North Carolina.
