FERRUM, Va. – Lois Carpenter's walk-off homer in the bottom of the eighth inning of the nightcap helped Ferrum College complete an Old Dominion Athletic Conference softball doubleheader sweep over Eastern Mennonite University this afternoon at American National Bank Field. The Panthers took the opener 5-3, then won game two 6-4 in eight innings.
Ferrum (15-11, 5-5 ODAC)
Eastern Mennonite (13-13, 2-8 ODAC)
In the opener, Ferrum scored two runs in the third inning on Cheyenne Strickland's RBI single to center field. The Panthers got three more runs in the fourth, including a pair off Keri Hamlett's RBI double to left center. The Royals scored two in the top of the seventh inning, but Ferrum's defense held. Ashton Lambeth got the win, pitching a complete seven-inning game.
Carpenter's three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning was the difference in the nightcap. Bailey Oakes had a solo homer to left field in the fourth inning. Eastern Mennonite scored a run in the seventh to send it to extra innings.
EMU's Dallas Crawford was placed on second to open the eighth inning, advanced to third on Emily Davis' single up the middle, then scored on a throwing error. In the bottom of the frame, Ferrum's Antoinette Payne was placed on second, then moved to third on Bayley Cunningham's sac bunt. Lacey Bishop walked and the Panthers had runners at the corners when Carpenter hit a towering shot over the left field fence to end the game.
Lambeth entered game two in the seventh inning with the Panthers holding a 3-2 lead, gave up two runs to erase the save opportunity and eventually earned the win to run her record to 11-3. It was the first time this season a Ferrum pitcher collected two wins in a doubleheader.

BEHIND THE WHISTLE
"Proud of the the team and the way they competed offensively, defensively and pitching in both games. It was a total team effort. In the second game, Lacey battled for a key two-out walk before Lois ended it with her blast over the left center field fence." --Head Coach Gerald Culler
Culler's team will be back in action Wednesday, April 3, at Emory & Henry College. The ODAC doubleheader is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start in Emory, Virginia.
