Averett Sweeps Ferrum in Softball Doubleheader

FERRUM, Va. -- Averett University took both ends of a non-conference softball doubleheader tonight at Ferrum College, winning the opener 3-1 and taking the nightcap 5-2 at American National Bank Field.

Both teams scored a run in the first inning of the opener, then Averett added a run in the third and one in the sixth to close it out.

In the nightcap, the Cougars scored a run in the top of the first inning, then added two each in the fifth and the seventh for the final count.

Ferrum scored its two runs in the third inning, one when Bayley Cunningham reached on an error and Lois Carpenter scored, and the other on Cheyenne Strickland's RBI single to drive in Bailey Oakes.

Keri Hamlett was a combined 3-5 with a stolen base in two games as Ferrum. Ashton Lambeth (4-1) got the game one loss after pitching seven innings, while Jasmine Agee (2-5) absorbed the loss in the nightcap after throwing seven innings.

Hannah Thompson recorded 11 strikeouts en route to earning the nightcap win for Averett. Thompson also went 5-7 at the plate in two games with two doubles, two runs, two RBI and a stolen base.

Coach Gerald Culler's team will be back in action Saturday, March 16, at home against SUNY Oswego. The non-conference doubleheader gets underway at 1:00 p.m.
