Softball Sweeps Randolph to Open Season

FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College's softball team opened the 2018 season with a pair of non-conference wins this afternoon at home, beating Randolph College 4-3 and 7-3 at American National Bank Field.

Cheyenne Strickland's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning drove in Jordan Hamlett and gave Ferrum the win in the opener. Courtney Rudd pitched a complete game with eight hits, one earned run, a walk and two strikeouts, and Lois Carpenter bashed a solo homer over the center field fence in the fourth inning. The Panthers jumped out to a 5-1 lead after two innings in the nightcap, and held on to complete the sweep.

"Proud of the way we fought back to get a win in the first game, and then kept it going in the second game," said Head Coach Gerald Culler.

Culler's team will be back in action Tuesday, Feb. 20, at Emory & Henry College. The non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start in Emory, Virginia.
