Softball Splits with Southern Virginia

BUENA VISTA, Va. -- Ferrum College split a non-conference softball doubleheader with Southern Virginia University this afternoon on the road, taking the opener 9-0 in five innings and dropping the nightcap 6-0 at Harvey-Dryden Field.

Ferrum led 2-0 after the first inning of game one, then added a pair of runs in the second inning, courtesy of Bailey Oakes' two-run homer to left center. Cheyenne Strickland crushed a grand slam homer over the center field fence in the fifth inning, and the Panthers held on for the run rule victory. Ashton Lambeth (5-3) pitched a complete five-inning, four-hitter with four strikeouts. Megan Harmon (6-5) tossed a complete seven-inning four-hitter with two strikeouts for Southern Virginia in the nightcap. Caitlin Barber went 3-3 with a homer, three runs and three RBI for the Knights.

The Panthers played another non-conference doubleheader Monday, March 26, on the road at Pfeiffer University. In the opener, a 2-0 win, Lambeth pitched a complete seven-inning, one-hit shutout with two strikeouts against the Falcons, who brought a 24-2 record into the day. Keri Hamlett went 2-4 in game one, then went 3-3 with a stolen base in the nightcap, an 8-3 loss.

Coach Gerald Culler's team will be back in action Friday and Saturday, March 30-31, with a pair of USA South doubleheaders at home. The Panthers host William Peace University Friday at 1:00 p.m., then take on Meredith College Saturday at 1:00 p.m. both at American National Bank Field.
