2018 USA South Softball All-Conference Team
FERRUM, Va. -- The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its 2018 softball All-Conference team, and Ferrum College had three players honored. Junior second basemen Cheyenne Strickland earned a spot on the All-East Division first team, while freshman catcher Tori Scott and senior pitcher Courtney Rudd were both second team picks.
Maryville College's Morgan Brewer, Taylor Campbell and Katlyn Smith were named Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Rookie Pitcher of the Year, respectively. Piedmont College's Melissa Eckman earned Pitcher of the Year, and Salem College's Scott Long was named Coach of the Year.
Strickland is batting .402 this season (43-107) with 21 runs, nine doubles, two home runs and 29 RBI. She also has a .448 on-base percentage and a .542 slugging percentage, and defensively has been a rock at second base with a .949 fielding percentage.
Rudd is 8-2 on the mound this season with a 1.42 earned run average in 74 innings. Opponents are batting just .190 against her, largely due to her 81 strikeouts. Scott is batting .319 (23-72) this season with six runs, eight doubles and eight RBI.
The USA South also recognized an All-Sportsmanship Team, consisting of one member from each competing school and Ferrum's Haley Blaisure was named to that team.
Ferrum opens play in the 2018 USA South Softball Tournament Friday and Saturday, April 6-7, with a first-round best-fo-three series at Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Panthers are the East #5 seed, while the Avenging Angels at the East #2 seed. The two teams will play a doubleheader this afternoon starting at 1:00 p.m. If a game three is necessary, the two teams will play that game Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
