FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College earned a pair of USA South Athletic Conference softball wins over visiting William Peace University this afternoon at home, winning the opener 9-8 in nine innings before completing the sweep with a 9-0 rout in the nightcap in five innings at American National Bank Field.

Ferrum led 5-0 after two full innings in game one, only to see the Pacers come back and score three in the third, one in the fourth and four in the fifth to grab an 8-5 lead. The Panthers battled back, getting two runs in the bottom of the sixth and one in the seventh to send it into extra innings. In the bottom half of the ninth inning, Ashton Lambeth singled to center field, then Marieka Pierce pinch ran for her. Pierce moved to second on Olivia Boyd's sac bunt, advanced to third on Kali Setzer's ground out and scored when Maddie Ols drilled an RBI single up the middle. Jasmine Agee (7-3) got the win, pitching the final six innings in relief. The Panthers jumped out to a 5-0 lead again in the second game, added a run each in the second and third innings, then tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth. Courtney Rudd (8-2) earned the nightcap win, pitching a five-inning two-hitter. Rudd fanned eight batters in the process, running her season strikeout total to 74. Cheyenne Strickland went 6-8 at the plate in two games, posting three doubles, four runs and six RBI. Lois Carpenter went 4-8 with a three-run homer in the first inning of game two, a double, a run, four RBI and a stolen base in the two games. Kristina Mojica and Alexa Nemeth each had three base hits on the day for the Pacers.
Coach Gerald Culler's team will be back in action Saturday, March 31, at home against Meredith College. The USA South doubleheader is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
