Ferrum Splits USA South Softball Doubleheader with Meredith

FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College split a USA South Athletic Conference softball doubleheader with Meredith College this afternoon at home, dropping the opener 9-3 before earning a 6-2 win in the nightcap at American National Bank Field.

Meredith (22-11, 11-5 USA South)

Meredith trailed 3-2 after four innings in the opener, but scored two in the fifth inning, three in the sixth and two in the seventh to grab the win. Kelsey Mabe had a two-run homer in the seventh inning for the Avenging Angels, and Taylor Jackson (12-6) pitched a complete seven-inning game with four strikeouts. Courtney Rudd (9-2) struck out seven batters in the nightcap to help Ferrum salvage the split.

Coach Gerald Culler's team will be back in action next weekend in the first round of the 2018 USA South Softball Tournament. The Panthers are the #5 team in the East and will play at #2 East Meredith in a best-of-three series Saturday and Sunday, April 7-8, in Raleigh, North Carolina. The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday and if necessary, a third game Sunday. Game times have yet to be determined.
