Ferrum Softball Trio Earns All-State Honors

FERRUM, Va. -- Three Ferrum College softball players have been named to the 2012 VaSID Collge Division All-State Sotball Team, including first team selections Hannah Shumaker (UTIL) and Karly Thompson (OF).

Thompson, a sophomore, batted a team-best .419 with 17 doubles, three triples, four home runs and 40 RBI.  Her doubles, home runs and RBI are all team-high totals, as are her .629 slugging percentage and .449 on-base percentage.  Thompson was successful in 15 of 16 stolen base attempts.

Thompspn was an All-Conference first team selection in the USA South Athletic Conference this season, and earned All-Region first team from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).

Shumaker, a senior, saw almost equal time at shortstop and pitcher this season.  She batted .398 with six doubles, five triples, four home runs and 35 RBI.  Her .571 slugging percentage and .441 on-base percentage were second on the team to Thompson.  Shumaker had a 2.68 earned run average and 7-9 record in 109.2 innings pitched this season.  She struck out 91 and walked 41, while allowing opponen ts a .238 batting average.

Shumaker was also an All-Conference first team and All-Region first team selection this season.  She earned All-Tournament at the 2012 USA South Tournament, including MVP honors. 

Joining Thompson and Shumaker on the All-State team was junior pitcher Kaitlyn Culler, who earned second team honors.  Culler closed with a 17-2 record and 1.21 earned run average over 133.2 innings.  She struck out 91 batters and waklked 23, while allowing opponents a .201 batting average.

The trio helped Ferrum close the 2012 season with a school record 36-14 record.  Ferrum won the 2012 USA South Tournament, having to win five straight to close the tournament, and advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the third time.  The Panthers are led by Head Coach Vickie Van Kleeck.
