2012 NFCA Division III All-Region Teams
FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College landed four players on the 2012 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III All-Region Team.  Included were senior utility Hannah Shumaker and sophomore outfielder Karly Thompson, both of whom were named to the All-Atlantic Region first team.

Shumaker and Thompson were both USA South All-Conference first team selections this season.  The duo helped lead Ferrum to a school record 36 wins, closing with a 36-14 final record.  Ferrum won the 2012 USA South Tournament title and earned the league's automatic qualifier into the 2012 NCAA Division III Tournament.

Thompson led the team in batting average (.419), hits (70), doubles (17), home runs (4, tied with two players), total bases (105), slugging percentage (.629) and on-base percentage (.449).  She was successful in 15 of 16 stolen base attempts.

Shumaker closed the season with a .398 batting average and led the Panthers in runs scored (42, tied with one player), triples (5) and home runs (tied with two players).  She had 64 hits, 35 RBI and 92 stolen bases.  Shumaker also pitched for the Panthers, closing the season with a 7-9 record and 2.68 ERA.  In 109 and two third innings, she struck out 92 batters and allowed opposing batters a .238 batting average.  Shumaker earned a spot on the USA South All-Tournament Team, claiming Tournament MVP honors.

Named to the All-Atlantic Region third team were a pair of Ferrum juniors, pitcher Kaitlyn Culler and outfielder Rachel Shumaker.  This is Shumaker's third All-Region honor, having been named to the third team in 2010 and the second team in 2011.  Culler was an All-Conference first team selection this year, while Shumaker was a third-teamer.  Both were named to the USA South All-Tournament Team.

Culler was one of Ferrum's top pitchers this season with a 17-2 record and 1.21 ERA.  She pitched 133 and a third innings, fanning 91 and allowing opposing hitters a .201 batting average.

Shumaker led Ferrum in at-bats (168), runs (42) and stolen bases (16-for-16).  She pitched 93 innings with an 11-3 record and 0.60 ERA.  Shumaker struck out 51 and allowed opposing hitters a .178 batting average.

As first-team selections, Shumaker and Thompson are both now in contention for All-America honors.  The NFCA Division III All-America Team will be announced Thursday, May 17.
