NCAA Division III Softball Regional Rankings, 4/26/12
FERRUM, Va. -- After winning the 2012 USA South Athletic Conference Softball Tournament and qualifying for the NCAA Division III playoffs, Ferrum College has attained a regional ranking.
Ferrum holds the #6 spot in the Atlantic Region rankings. Emory University is the Atlantic Region's top-ranked team at 29-3. Christopher Newport University (34-9) is second, followed by Salisbury University (34-5), Louisiana College (25-11), Roanoke College (29-9), and Ferrum (35-12). Bridgewater College (33-12) and Virginia Wesleyan College (30-12) round out the poll with the final two spots.
Emory is a member of the University Athletic Association, while Christopher Newport and Ferrum are members of the USA South Athletic Conference. Salisbury is from the Capital Athletic Conference, and Louisiana competes in the American Southwest Conference. Roanoke, Bridgewater and Virginia Wesleyan are all members of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
Ferrum won the USA South Tournament two weeks ago and claimed the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III playoffs. Roanoke won the ODAC Tournament this past weekend.
Coach Vickie Van Kleeck's team will be making its third trip to the NCAA Division III Softball Tournament. Ferrum also made the tournament in 2002 and 2005. in 2002, the team made its NCAA debut in Atlanta, Georgia, at Emory. Then in 2005, the Panthers played at Salisbury in Maryland. Ferrum will learn its 2012 playoff destination when selections for the NCAA Division III Tournament are announced Monday, May 7.
