Burlington, N.C. -- Ferrum College staved off elimination twice at the 2012 USA Softball Tournament today at Springwood Park. In the process, Ferrum posted its 31st and 32nd wins of the year, setting a new school record for season wins.
The previous season total wins best was in 2010 when the Panthers posted a 31-16 final record, and advanced to the title game of the USA South Tournament.
After earning a 15-2 win over #6 seed Shenandoah University Friday, the #3 Panthers suffered a 5-4 setback to #7 Averett University. The loss dropped Ferrum into the losers bracket, and had to play again immediately.
Ferrum scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning and held on for a 4-3 win over #4 Methodist University. After a short rest, the Panthers returned to the diamond where they handed #5 Greensboro College a 2-0 shutout to advance to Sunday's final day of competition.
Against Greensboro, Rachel Shumaker's solo home in the third inning was all the Panthers would need. Chloe Brzycki added an insurance run when she drove Shelbie Hall in with an RBI single. Shumaker pitched four innings to get the win, allowing three hits and striking out two. Shumaker also got the win over Methodist, pitching the final three innings with no earned runs and a strikeout.
Against Methodist, the Panthers put together four hits in the seventh inning as they rallied from a 2-0 deficit. Kaitlyn Culler and R. Shumaker led off the seventh inning with back-to-back singles. Hannah Shumaker then delivered an RBI single for Ferrum's first run. She finished the game 2-4 with a double and an RBI.
Brzycki tied the game with an infield single before the Monarchs got the second out of the inning with a play at the plate. An error on the next play, a routine grounder, allowed the Panthers to take a 3-2 lead. Ferrum tacked on another run when Karly Thompson scored on a wild pitch.
Methodist loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and after scoring a run, R. Shumaker helped Ferrum escape with the win when she got a grounder to end the game.
Ferrum earns a rematch with Averett, playing the Cougars Sunday at 10 a.m. The winner of that game advances to the championship game and will need two wins to defeat #1 Christopher Newport University.
