Ferrum Advances in USA South Softball Tournament

BURLINGTON, N.C. -- Ferrum College's seven-run inning in the bottom of the second inning propelled the Panthers to a 15-2 win over #6 Shenandiah University this afternoon in the opening round of the 2012 USA South Softball Tournament.

Ferrum's KarlyThompson led the inning off with a solo homer to left field.  The #3 seed Panthers continued the scoring frenzy as they ended the inning with seven runs off four hits and two errors.

Ferrum took advantage of the #6 Hornets (20-16) with another big inning as the Panthers poured on eight runs on seven hits.  Shenandoah broke up the shutout in the bottom of the fifth as they cut the final score to 15-2.

Kaitlyn Culler improved to 16-2 with the win, pitching all five innings.  She allowed eight hits, two earned runs and no walks, while striking out two.  Ferrum (30-11) plays Saturday at noon against Averett (20-20), which beat #2 Meredith 4-3 today.
