USA South Release
FERRUM, Va. -- Seven Ferrum College softball players have been named to the 2012 USA South All-Conference Team, including three first-team selections.
Senior Hannah Shumaker (Util), junior Kaitlyn Culler (P) and sophomore Karly Thompson (OF) all earned first team honors. This is Shumaker's fourth All-Conference honor, and the second straight first team selection. Shumaker is batting .402 this season (51-for-127) with five doubles, three triples, three home runs and 24 RBI.
Thompson leads Ferrum in batting average (.466), hits (62), RBI (39), slugging percentage (.707) and on-base percentage (.493). She has been successful in 13 of 14 stolen base attempts.
Culler is 15-2 on the mound for the Panthers, and has a 1.19 earned run average over 105.2 innings pitched. She has allowed 77 hits, 18 earned runs and 15 walks, while striking out 74 batters. Opposing hitters have a .196 batting average off Culler.
Junior Rachel Shumaker has been named to the All-Conference third team as an outfielder and is an honorable mention at pitcher. Joining Shumaker on the honorable mention squad are senior Brittany Barlow (3B) and freshman Kylene Culler (SS). Senior Nicole Hinkley is Ferrum's designee to the 2012 USA South Softball All-Sportsmanship Team.
Christopher Newport University's Sabrina Hill earned Player and Rookie of the Year, while the Captains' Whitney Haller earned Pitcher of the Year. Methodist University's Kayla Malone earned Rookie Pitcher of the Year and Meredith College's Kim Scavone earned Coach of the Year.
Ferrum (29-11, 12-6 USA South) will play this week in the USA South Tournament, to be held Friday through Sunday, April 13-15, in Burlington, North Carolina. Coach Vickie Van Kleeck's team is the #3 seed and faces #6 Shenandoah University Friday at 11:00 a.m. in the opening round.
