FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Ferrum College split a USA South softball doubleheader with Methodist University this afternoon on the road, losing 3-2 and winning 10-0 in five innings.
Trailing 3-0 after five innings in the first game, Ferrum scored two runs in the sixth before falling. Hannah Shumaker absorbed the loss, allowing five hits over five runs, while striking out seven. The Panthers lost despite out-hitting the Monarchs 7-5.
Ferrum's bats got hot in the nightcap with 13 hits, including seven for extra bases. Kylene Culler went 3-3 with two doubles, two RBI and a run for Ferrum (28-10, 12-6 USA South). Culler's double to left center in the second inning drove in the eventual game-winning run, scored by Brittany Barlow.
The Panthers led 3-0 after four innings, but exploded for seven runs in the top of the fifth, including consecutive doubles by Karly Thompson, Suzanne Plasters and Culler.
Starter Kaitlyn Culler allowed two hits, a walk and no runs over four innings to earn the nightcap victory. She improved to 14-2 this season with a 1.21 ERA and 69 strikeouts.
Ferrum (28-10, 12-6 USA South) returns to action Saturday, April 7, at Guilford College. The non-conference doubleheader starts at 1:00 p.m. in Greensboro, North Carolina.
