FERRUM, Va. -- Chloe Brzycki belted a grand slam in the fourth inning of the opener as Ferrum College swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Southern Virginia University 11-0 and 9-1 tonight at Franklin Community Bank Field.
The first game was halted after five innings, while the second was stopped after six innings. Brzycki went 4-6 in the two games with a home run, seven RBI, two runs, a stolen base and a sac fly. Bryzicki's grand slam was also her first career home run.
In the first game, Hannah Shumaker went 2-2 with three runs, and Karly Thompson went 2-2 with a double, three RBI and a run. In the nightcap, Shumaker went 2-4 with a pair of runs, and Thompson went 2-4 with a double and scored a run.
Kaitlyn Culler (Patrick County) pitched a complete 5-inning game in the opener to get the win, striking out four. Rachel Shumaker pitched all six innings in the nightcap with seven strikeouts.
Ferrum (11-1) will be in action this weekend at the Roanoke Valley Softball Bash, to be held Saturday and Sunday, March 10-11, at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex in Salem.
The Panthers are scheduled to play Randolph-Macon College and Hunter College Saturday at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. On Sunday, Coach Vickie Van Kleeck's team will play Huntingdon College and Eastern Mennonite University at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
