FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College Men's Lacrosse Coach Michael Baggetta has been named one of four coaches for the 2019 Beyond Sports USA College Men's Lacrosse Tour Team in Australia. The 12-day tour departed from Los Angeles on June 10 and will return June 21.
The USA College Lacrosse Tour will include three US College Women's Lacrosse Tour teams. Baggetta joins the USA Lacrosse Tour along with two-time Division III Women's Lacrosse National Champion (2007, 2009) and two-time National Coach of the Year, Mike Faith of Franklin & Marshall University, 2019-MAC Commonwealth Champion, Jackie Dando from Lebanon Valley College and winningest coach in Aurora University program history, Christina Fried.
The team is comprised of 21 student-athletes from 12 different DII/DIII universities and colleges across the U.S. The selection criteria for the team include statistical leaders, all-conference recognition, and coach recommendations.
"I'm humbled and honored to be asked to coach these young men," Baggetta said. "It's such an exciting opportunity on so many levels, from the working with Beyond Sports, building an international network with the Australian Lacrosse Clubs and their players, as well cultivating relationships with our players that are representing the United States. The lacrosse community is a small close-knit group, my goal is to continue to have a positive influence on all the young men involved while helping with the growth of the game.
Lacrosse has a long history in Australia, having been played in the country since 1876. It is now a popular sport, particularly in the states of Victoria and South Australia, and their National Team has been a consistent contender at the World Lacrosse Championships.
The USA College Men's Lacrosse Team will compete in three exhibition games against local and national Australian teams. The tour opens up with a game against Camberwell Lacrosse Club June 18 in Cairns, then continues with a game against the Australia National U19 team June 19 in Melbourne, and wraps up against the Altona Lacrosse Club June 20 also in Melbourne.
While on their journey through Australia the team will start by sightseeing the Sydney Opera House, Darlington Harbor and get a spectacular 360-degree view of Sydney from the Sydney Tower Observation Deck. Walk the Australian Coast from Bondi to Coogee Beach, checking out two of Australia's most popular beaches. Take an excursion in Queensland to the Kuranda Koala Gardens, to appreciate some of icon wildlife of Australia getting an opportunity to hold a Koala, feed kangaroos and wallabies. While in Cairns the team will spend a day on the water to explore one of the 7 natural wonders of the world- snorkeling The Great Barrier Reef and get a chance to take in all the sights at the Botanical Gardens of Cairns. Spending the last three days in the world's most livable city of Melbourne. While in Melbourne the team will roam down the Great Ocean Road getting breathtaking views of the rugged coastline and beautiful countryside. Before playing their last game, the team will spend the morning at the famous Queen Victoria Market, getting a taste of the largest open-air market in the Southern Hemisphere!
