FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College built a 14-point second-half lead, then hung on for a 73-69 Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's basketball win over visiting Hampden-Sydney College tonight at Swartz Gym.

Ferrum (4-15, 3-7 ODAC)
Hampden-Sydney (4-12, 1-8 ODAC)

The win was the second this season over the Tigers, including an 85-80 win Dec. 15 on the road. Ferrum trailed 16-15 at the 11:05 mark tonight, but used an 8-0 run to take a 23-16 lead and never trailed from there.

After leading 43-32 at the break, the Panthers widened the lead to 14 points at 56-42 on Nick Helton's three-pointer with 9:06 left to play. It was one of Helton's six made baskets from behind the arc.

Hampden-Sydney got as close as 71-69 with 14 seconds left in regulation off a three-pointer by Cole Atwood. R.J. Turner was fouled immediately on Ferrum's next possession and sank a pair of free throws to help Ferrum hang on for its third ODAC win of the season.

Ferrum: Helton 20 pts, 6 3FG; Marcus Huff 15 pts; Marcus Plair 11 pts, 7 reb
Hampden-Sydney: Morgan McKay 13 pts; Jake Hahn 10 pts; Brendan McHale 10 reb

"I thought we executed well offensively and when we shared the ball, we got great looks. Fortunately, we made some shots from the perimeter early and got some rhythm, which led to the guys having confidence. I was really proud of our defensive effort. We still had some lapses, but for the most part we fought and battled while sticking to our game plan. Again, always great to experience success. It's been a tough season, record wise, our schedule has been really difficult. We are in a great place to fight for a spot in the conference tournament. That's our goal. Looking forward to getting back to work." --Head Coach Tyler Sanborn

Sanborn's team will return to the hardwood Wednesday, Jan. 30, at Emory & Henry College. The ODAC game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off in Emory, Virginia.
