HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Ferrum College earned its first ever Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's basketball victory with an 85-80 road win over Hampden-Sydney College this afternoon at Fleet Gymnasium.
Ferrum (2-8, 1-3 ODAC)
Hampden-Sydney (4-4, 1-3 ODAC)
The Panthers trailed 7-3 early on, but a 10-2 run, capped by RJ Turner's layup at 9:10 of the first half, gave the visitors a 13-9 lead. Ferrum outscored the Tigers 28-21 from there and led 41-30 at the break.
The Panthers led by 13 twice in the second half, 43-30 on a pair of Trey Barnhardt free throws to open the half, then 51-38 when Carrington Young made a free throw at 15:28. Hampden-Sydney cut the lead to 79-75 on Chaise Johnson's layup with 39 seconds left in regulation, but Young had four free throws and Marcus Huff had two freebies in the waning seconds to put the game away.
BEHIND THE WHISTLE
"Quality team win for our program. We competed from the jump and didn't let up for 40 minutes. Our team has struggled with that this season, great first halves and then let downs in the second. We finally put it together and it resulted in a conference road win, which are hard to come by. Happy for the guys and I am looking forward to continuing to get better." --Head Coach Tyler Sanborn
BACK ON COURT
Sanborn's cagers will be back in action Tuesday, Dec. 18, at Catholic University. The non-conference game tips off at 5:00 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
