DANVILLE, Va. -- Ferrum College dropped its football season finale this afternoon at Averett University, falling 20-13 in non-conference action at Campbell Stadium.
The game was a defensive battle, one that yielded a combined 572 yards of total offense. Averett scored first on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Wright to Jarrod Mosby and the score was 6-0 after a missed extra point attempts at 9:34 of the first quarter. Zack Clifford scored on a 13-yard run for Ferrum at 4:34 of the first, but the Panthers' PAT attempt also failed and the score was locked at 6-6.
Denarius Hilton put the Cougars out in front 13-7 when he scored on a seven-yard run to open the second quarter, then Rayvon Johnson hauled in a 17-yard touchdown pass from Wright with 28 seconds to go in the first half for a 20-6 Cougar lead. Ferrum trimmed the lead to 20-13 when Johnny White hauled in a 27-yard scoring strike from Clifford at 6:00 of the third quarter, then defense ruled the rest of the afternoon. The Panthers held Averett scoreless in the second half.
