Ferrum Splits ODAC Baseball Doubleheader with Marlins

FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader with Virginia Wesleyan University, dropping the opener 7-2 before bouncing back for a 10-6 win in the nightcap tonight at Panther Field.

THE BASICS
Virginia Wesleyan scored four runs in the fourth inning of the opener, two off Reese Reid's home run to left field, then added a run in the sixth to take a 5-0 lead.

Ferrum chipped away at the lead, scoring a run in the seventh and one in the eighth, only to see the Marlins tack on two in the ninth for the final count. Daniel Petro and Jacob Pilarski also homered in game one for Virginia Wesleyan.

In the nightcap, Ferrum led 3-2 after four innings, then exploded for five runs in the fifth. Four of those runs came in when Grey Sherfey singled up the middle with the bases loaded, and an error by the centerfielder allowed him to circle the bases and cross the plate. Tim Ortega went 4-5 with a home run and a double, and closed the game a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.
