Panthers in the Pros

Billy Wagner Billy Wagner heads a group of former student-athletes that have gone on to play professional sports.  Wagner is currently with the Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, but began with the Houston Astros, which selected him as the 12th pick overall in the 1993 MLB draft.

Wagner was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies before joining the New York Mets, then was picked up off waivers by the Red Sox in the summer of 2009.  Wagner is currently the closer for the Atlanta Braves.

Wagner set a major league record in 1997 with the Astros with a 14.4 strikeouts per nine innings average. One of the hardest-throwing lefthanders in the game, Wagner's fastball has been clocked at 99 miles per hour. Wagner earned  All-Star nods in 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2008.

Ferrum's most successful pro football player was Chris Warren, who played for the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles after stints with the Dallas Cowboys and the Seattle Seahawks.  Warren was a three-time All-Pro running back for the Seahawks.  In 1994, Warren finished second in the NFL in rushing, behind Barry Sanders.

Eric Owens' also played professional baseball with a number of Major League Baseball teams.  Owens' most recent MLB action was during the 2003 season, when he was with the Anaheim Angels. Owens also played for the Florida Marlins, Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Brewers, and San Diego Padres.
