Freshman Joelyn Arthur scored the winning run in the bottom of the 8th inning of game #1.
FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College swept Guilford College in a non-conference softball doubleheader April 16 at home. The Panthers won the first game 7-6 in eight innings, then took posted a 6-5 come-from-behind win in the nightcap.

In the first game, junior Lauren Rizzo drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring freshman Joelyn Arthur. Freshman Katie Duff pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits over eight innings with six earned runs. Duff fanned seven batters and walked four.
Ferrum won despite being out-hit 7-2 in the game, getting help from a Quaker defense that committed five errors. Senior Kryestyn Matherly and freshman Jasmine Parker had a base hit each for Ferrum. Matherly went 1-2 with two walks, an RBI, a run, and a stolen base.
Guilford out-hit Ferrum 12-5 in the second game, but committed four errors. The Quakers opened a 4-0 lead after three and a half innings, only to see Ferrum score three runs in the bottom of the fourth and add three more in the botttom of the fifth to take a 6-4 lead. Guilford scored another run in the top of the seventh inning, a Kelly Guarnieri solo home run, but Matherly retired three of the next four batters to earn the win.
Matherly got the complete game win, scattering 12 hits over seven innings and allowing five earned runs. She struck out three batters and walked one, and got a solid defensive help with no Ferrum errors.
Ferrum improves to 17-21 with the win, while the Quakers fall to 20-19-1. Coach Vickie Van Kleeck's team will play as the #6 seed in this weekend's
2008 USA South Softball Tournament. The Panthers begin play Friday, April 18, at 11 a.m. against #3 seed Methodist University. The tournament is being held at Springwood Park in Burlington, North Carolina.
